DIARIES

FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022

Artwork business cards arrived by mail yesterday (THUR., JUNE 9) but was with WC too late to bring by exhibit. Ordered 4X4 prints and 8X8 of announcement/highlight created by AM from Walgreens [$4.57]. Dropped business cards off at Six Twelve Coffeehouse & Bar, along with hard copy of Guessing Game Giveaway and signage for game. Barista, Meg, was very nice- wore a Kirby t-shirt. Told me that it was apparent that I draw inspiration from Warhol and it was a switch up from the art they usually show. Everyone seems to be painting abstract work these days. Ordered a hazelnut iced coffee and poppyseed bread off Meg’s recommendation [$5 with gratuity for Meg]. Wish I’d asked which piece was Meg’s favorite + least favorite- need to be more comfortable talking about the work. Came home early from Spa B with ankle P + swelling, x-rays at Med Express, no fracture just a sprain. Medicine prescribed, rested for the rest of the night except to start a layer of paint on a new 12”X12” canvas + touch up the surprise McBryde painting.

SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2022

Started the day making a Pride flag collage from 6 colorful pieces from my portfolio for NWA Pride post. Worked on and finished sock “Strip Tease” canvas midday, left time for touch ups later after gold and silver coloring was done. Robert says that I get better at what I’m doing from when I started a year and a half ago, while he still might not appreciate it approve of the content- the work improves! Added a tagline to Artwork website. Worked until after midnight sketching 3 of 5 on the “Drop Cloth” series, could not select or properly project the last 2.

SUNDAY, JUNE 19, 2022

Worked like a demon. Finished sketching last two of five drop cloth canvases with figures. Painted/drew final image on all five canvases. Updated website to include “Drop Cloth” series + ”Strip Tease”. Worked a little on surprise McBryde canvas and decided I need to repaint the faces to be blank- matches the rest of the figures and don’t have to fuss over details. Finally finished commissioned “Generations” paper painting for D.D., had to reduce/cover facial lines. Spent a long time mixing the right skin tone colors (color theory will put me in an early grave). Finished commissioned landscapes of SAU & UARK for Rob. Updated website with commissions. Finished the night working on the “Sonic” canvas- got it completed and don’t like it. Will set aside with “Italian” canvas to review later- May just repaint the whole thing. It turned out too much vertical figures in the center and it’s bad.

SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2022

Finished the outline/drop cloth marks on the Pride Drop Cloth series and began sketching figures of Queer celebrities on each canvas. Got the figures outlined in silver ink, not sure how to proceed. To paint in with color or leave as outlines? Making decisions is so hard, I wish I just knew what to do.

SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2022

Took the new Drop Cloth series + the Strip Tease canvases to White Lotus for display. Noticed that Midnight Sovereign is displayed in their waiting area between two chairs (no price label- maybe this is an aesthetic choice instead of a marketing strategy) at any rate, I am honored to have my artwork shown.

Updated Artwork Website to include a Shop + additional Bio. I think I'll include a page for these entries, "DIARIES".

MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2022

Went a whole new route with the Pride Drop Cloth series! Painted the figures all in white because I want to sketch again and add pops of color later.

FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2022

A.H. with Embassy Suites was excited to show me the supplies bought for the graphic murals they’ve hired me to paint in their basement and banquet break rooms. They really went all out! Gallons of beautiful paints, brushes, drop cloths, stirring sticks… AV is going to help set up the projector in the basement/laundry break room. Went down to clear the walls & move furniture off the two walls I’ll be painting. I meet with H.G. 8am Monday morning to get started!

Hyping myself up for my Artists Reception on Sunday at SixTwelve.

SUNDAY, JULY 3, 2022

Had a massage at WL from 10-11am, took Droste Effect anniversary photo with Rob and momma after. Artist’s Reception at Six Twelve Coffeehouse & Bar from 2-4pm. They played the playlist I made for the show. Rob had a Coca Cola, momma and I had cocktails (Pineapple Coconut Bliss & Strawberries & Cream Fizzer) P.K. + sister K/C(?) showed and had coffees. Much talk about local artists. W.C. & L. arrived and had a cocktail and a beer. O.M. & E.B. showed up before visiting O.’s mom. E and L played the Giveaway Guessing Game, L ended up winning by one point. About 8 other patrons were in and out through the reception. Took pieces down promptly at 4pm with help from W & L. Bought Pride cookies. Left the barista/bartender a soap for taking care of our party. Brought artwork home and after momma & W left, I glossed a few canvases but it smeared the gold ink on some works.

MONDAY JULY 4, 2022

Bought donuts + coffee before 8:30am start on mural at Embassy Suites. H.G. helped me set up projector (after trying my own- didn’t work), got Centurion sketch/trace/stencil in graphite on the first wall in little over two hours. Pizza provided by HR for lunch. Got the Core Values sketch/trace/stencil done in little under two hours, finished around 1:30pm.

Brought unsold paintings from SixTwelve to White Lotus along with museum labels and source images. (I should keep a log or prints of my original source images…)

TUESDAY JULY 5, 2022

Had an unexpected 40 minute break in my schedule so I seized the opportunity to tape up drop cloths under both sketches in laundry basement breakroom. Rob helped watch the dogs in the afternoon/evening so I could spend two hours at the end of my shift getting paint on the Core Values mural. From 4m-6pm.

THURSDAY JULY 7, 2022
Went in to Embassy Suites on my day off to work on the mural projects more. 8:30am - 11:45am. Finished Spirit Triangle's first coat and got halfway through the core values in English&Spanish their first coat. Everything is starting to look like a mural, just have to finish first coat and the two or three coats. Still anticipating the hard work of the Centurion wall.
Bought 18"X24" frames, new brushes, paint markers that day. Planned to visit Sleet City Art Supply in Fayetteville, but had too much in my day. This Sunday is the Gallery at the NWA Mall's monthly artists reception. I need to apply for their waitlist...

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2022

Yesterday (THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 2022), had a late coffee date with J.M. at Pink House Alchemy in Fayetteville. Waited in car for her arrival- eventually went over next door to Sleet City Art Supply- bought a set of Metallic Posca Pens after buying a set last week [$36.66 with tax each time]. Heard back from Walton Arts Center by email while I was at Spa B, Strip Tease has been accepted as aa part of their upcoming 2022 Our ART Exhibition. My first time applying for a juried exhibit! More details to come in the next few weeks. Was thinking I might make a limited edition T-Shirt to match the paining...

TUESDAY OCTOBER 4, 2022

I went to Walton Art Center’s Artist Preview of the Our Art Exhibition after work and feeding the dogs. Rob met me in the parking lot across from WAC. He needed mints and something to drink because he said his voice was getting worn out and he had a presentation later that evening. Paid for 3 hours of parking [$2.50] and were one of the first persons there. Talked with J.S., one of the three on the Exhibition Team. An artist showed with sunglasses but they said they couldn’t display them with the piece and that broke my heart a little for her. The show was actually really well put together - everything just flows well together. My piece is on a wall with a lot of other pieces all close together but it looks so incredible that it doesn’t feel crowded- don’t know how they did that. They told us that the labels just got made an hour before the preview opened so they didn’t have time to put them out. We would have to rely on the paper catalog of the show and talk to other artists to learn about the show- which was a lot of fun after I got over being shy. Rob was able to stick around for a half hour before he had to go back to work- we had a bottled water each and a plate from their charcuterie.
I met S.R. and her supporter, she wanted to know if I worked at WAC (I wore a stuffy get up because I wanted the suit jacket, shirt, and clip on tie to match the color of my painting- awful night, my back sweated all night long), she wanted to know about the missing lables. She explained that her pieces (4 wooden framed images) were made from digital coding- which impressed me because I don’t understand how that is possible but they were nice pieces of art- the yellow was my favorite.
I spoke with H.K. and his terra cotta pieces- he was softer spoken and I struggled to hear him clearly with the crowd noise. But he explained that he also did the huge sphere on the Fayetteville Town Center (where I graduated Blue Cliff). I met D and P.H. next- I told him that the yellows in his piece spoke to me. D. told me she thinks Springdale will be the center of local art soon. I think I met M.E. next- the woven box sculpture of old t shirts- I told her that I thought it had to be supported with wire- I resisted telling her that my Dalmatian Coolidge would love playing and tearing up a piece like that. She told me that the last time a piece like that was in a show that people kept turning it upside down. At some point I spoke with A who was D.S. plus one- he made her wooden panel. I told A that I couldn’t have the patience to paint all the dots of snow on D.S.’s piece. I did a lot of wandering- D.S. and I spoke for a while after A had moved on. I decided I wanted some wine so I ordered a Pinot Grigio and sat outside the Gallery for a while. D.S. came around with a plate and asked if she could sit with me- we had another good talk and she said goodbye to M.J. as he was leaving- then noticed A all alone by the door and excused herself. I wandered back inside the Gallery until I ran into a conversation with A.S. and she kept describing her painting as depressing and I hope I didn’t offend her intention with the work but to me it’s a sense of Serenity and Comfort to me- I did tell her that the piece felt masculine so I was amazed she had been the artist. I also spent a brief moment with D.P.S. - I told him Rob said his oil painting looked right out of Crystal Bridges- like an old masters painting- D.P.S liked that and gave me a fist bump about getting accepted in the show. A.S., S.R. and I were approached by J.R. while discussing my piece and pointed out his self portrait- I liked it. J.R. wanted to see A.S.’s piece so they walked off. I think at that point I was approached by the social media director J. and agreed to be interviewed. I’d never worn a mic before and I forgot to answer questions by repeating the question after introducing myself. I hope they got something that was worthwhile. M.E. ran past me later and said she saw me get interviewed- said she’d never want to do that! At some point (earlier or not) I talked with M.J. and his family- his daughter was really impressed with my show which was exciting because it seems she “represents” her father M.J. she had to leave but M.J. spoke with me a while - his work is so impressive because of their scale and they open the Gallery- appropriately too! C.S. came in with a girl and we eventually crossed paths- he complimented the metallic in my work (a common theme about the night) he told me it was like a conversation between our work because they are on the same wall and in similar size but he used metallic gel pens. He called the space we’re on the “gold star wall” and I think he’s right. I also briefly spoke with S.M. and didn’t really connect to her piece at first from a distance but she did individually painted dots on the frame herself- when I got a chance to look closer I wanted to ask if  it was a collage. I ended the night with a great conversation with S.H. about color- we are both on the same wall too. We both don’t like red but our work features reds in them. I told her I liked the unpainted canvas that sneaks in the longer you look at her piece and that I don’t usually like abstract work but I liked hers quite a bit.
Everyone kept saying how much they liked Strip Tease and especially wanted to know how I did the metallic color. Someone told me it was executed very well. Spacing/Composition was also complimented- which is probably why it’s so popular on social media and got accepted to the show. A.S. pointed out something I couldn’t even see about it- the abstract background! I had a great time and look forward to Thursday night.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2022
Had another great night at Walton Art Centers Opening Reception for the Our Art Exhibition. KMC, WC, and LB joined me. I hid Circles framed artwork in a plastic baggie at my favorite spot around Dickson Street, across from WAC. Paid for parking - 3 hours [$2.15]. LB and KMC dressed to match the colors of Strip Tease- LB looked really great! We got there early and they wouldn’t open the doors this time until promptly 5pm. We waited outside, I met J. and we stood and talked around E’s beetle sculpture. M showed up in support of E wearing a dress with beetle prints- loved it. I met M in passing Tuesday but forgot to write about it in the diaries. When we got inside, we had to pass though metal detectors because they had a theater show later that night and had to do regular security. J.S. told me that my painting was the first piece sold! I couldn’t believe it- even though MLL had expressed interest in purchasing… I didn’t know he had bought it until later. KMC wanted to take a lot of pictures of the art and WC was excited they had a free bar. I had two servings of wine for the night and a plate of their finger foods. They had the exit to the garden open which was nice but we didn’t take advantage of it. I kept going in and out of the Gallery to recharge my social battery. I was very proud to have my piece have a red dot sticker underneath the label. Met MLL and A, they were very complimentary of Strip Tease and were excited  about displaying it in their closet/bathroom. They thought it was funny I described his blue cheese dressing sculpture as a Jell-O shot. I took pictures posing with KMC and LB- didn’t think to as MLL if he’d like a picture too. Met ZT and Pat again. Met lots of artists a second time. I learned a lot about how people view my art and lots about Strip Tease that I never knew before. MLL suggested to raise my prices that Strip Tease could have sold for $250 at least. Said id think about it. Met an artists mom, Carrie and MJ, as well as PL. Before we left for the night, I made a point of personally extending my gratitude to KT and JS separately. I think I’ll make the exhibition team blotted kind drawing thank you cards…

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2022
Had a dream last night for a new painting. A woman figure with hair blowing about wild and the billowing ruffles of an American flag draping over her face. Woke up thinking about it all day. Eventually decided on using a close up of Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus- an iconic vision of hair being blown about!
Before bed, rendered the background on a canvas with more black ink leftover from failed silkscreens last year. The untouched canvas of the Venus figure is striking!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2022
Been reminded of the un(SEEN) exhibition call for artists for 2023 at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Found the specifications sheet to review and began a study sketch for my vision.
Still need to plan on color schemes but I think I’ve got the concept planned.
Deadline for submissions are Jan. 19, 2023, so I need to get started ASAP!

THURSDAY DECEMBER 8, 2022
Ran to Hobby Lobby to pick up a 36”x36” canvas. 36 being the maximum width allowed for the un(SEEN) exhibition, and I like making portraits (and paintings in general) in squares like Warhol.
I told myself I couldn’t spend more than what I’d earned from selling Strip Tease at the OurArt Exhibit ($75). There was a 40% off sale on canvas, paint, brushes, etc. but the canvas was priced at $79.99- I looked at the 30”x30” in case I was over budget but really wanted 36… I pulled one out and decided I should pick one from the back to avoid imperfections from being front facing to customers. And the 36”s in the back we’re priced at $64.99!
I took that one to the front and got the 40% discount on the lower price- I’ll always check the back products now! Paid cash[$42.99].

I came across an advertisement on Instagram. A Call For Art post for Fenix Arts Gallery in Fayetteville. I’m thinking I may submit some past works for consideration.
